Best Restaurants in London England
Luxury Travel's Picks for Top Upscale Places to Eat Memorable Meals
London has been a European destination point for immigrants for years now; in many ways, London in the 21st century is even more of a mosaic of cultures than the US. One way London - and England as a whole - has benefitted from this influx is in the cuisine offered by popular restaurants. The broadening of the British palate is a boon for tourists, of course - traditional English food being somewhat less than exciting - and a luxury vacation in London can be happily enhanced with a reservation at one of its best upscale restaurants. It's no coincidence that Luxury Travel's picks for top London restaurants are Indian, Japanese, and Italian/Spanish. We can save the cucumber sandwiches for tea time.
Best restaurants in London - Luxury Travel's favorites review:
Tamarind, 20 Queen St - It's not just the best upscale Indian restaurant in London, it's my pick for best in Europe. The decor is formal and crisp, with a modern touch. The service was impeccable. And the food - which of course is central to any dining experience - is simply amazing. This is the perfect place to finally break out of that naan-and-chicken tikka masala rut so many curry-fearing diners fall into. There are both traditional and contemporary options. Start with the grilled scallops, or padpi channa chaat; each flavor in this appetizer (tamarind chutney, chickpeas, sweetened yogurt) blends perfectly. For curry, the balaochi raan - slow cooked lamb shank - is amazing. This is a Michelin star restaurant; even the rice and breads are exemplary. And, if you must, the murgh makni is Tamarind's first-class version of good old chicken tikka masala. Only much, much better.
Roka, 37 Charlotte St - This is a classy, trendy and upscale Japanese restaurant: Roka is popular with the beautiful people, and a meal here is a top way to impress virtually anyone. Fans of Japanese cuisine will be delighted here, but reservations are absolutely needed. Popular, remember? And presentation is key at Roka; entress arrive beautifully, sushi on ice. The tasting menus are highly recommended. The less expensive version, though, is 50 pounds per person (as of this writing, that's around a hundred US dollars) and I preferred the 75 pound version. Luxury travelers can expect to pay prices like these for the best Japanese food in London. Other popular favorites at Roka are the rock shrimp tempura, the wagyu sushi (this is thinly sliced Kobe beef), and the rice hot pot with king crab and tobiko. Some complain about the service being intrusive, but I found this to not be the case. The sommelier was very helpful (matching wine with a tasting menu is tricky), and the waiters were only at our table when needed.
St. Alban, 4-12 Regent St - The curved banquettes and paintings of household objects are inviting, and the staff is friendly at this best London restaurant. The menu changes with the seasons, to ensure freshness of ingredients. When we were there last, the entrees seemed to skew to French cuisine, but the options can just as likely be generally Spanish or Italian - no matter. This pan-European restaurant makes bring fine dining to a new level, regardless of what country is most represented on the menu. If still on the menu, try the courgette flowers appetizer. It's an interesting dish, but not in a distracting way. The herb-encrusted rump of lamb with aubergine and the fillet of gilthead bream were exemplary. My dining companion still raves about the dessert cheese platter; a return trip to London may be in order, just to have another meal at St. Alban.
Luxury Travel's Best London Restaurant Review Honorable Mentions: Jamie Oliver's 15 Restaurant is a not-for-profit restaurant, the food is tasty and you can feel as if you did a good deed simply by choosing it. The River Cafe is a pricey spot for a delicious lunch or dinner, but it's in a gritty, questionable part of London (we saw a person breaking into a phone booth right outside the restaurant). Both serve Italian food. There is also a Nobu in Hyde Park, and it's essentially the same as the Nobu in NYC and Malibu.

The name Zaika translates quite literally as sophisticated flavours and this is the ethos behind the innovative menu. With an emphasis on refined yet creative Indian cuisine, the menu incorporates both traditional classic favourites and original new dishes that apply eastern flavours with a western twist. Acclaimed favourites include Indian Home Smoked Salmon, Lamb Rogan Josh and Chocolate Silk, a dish that has been greatly imitated by other establishments across the Capital. Located at the heart of Kensington in a prominent position opposite Hyde Park, the grand building that Zaika occupies was formerly a bank and has retained many original architectural features including the carved high ceilings and double height windows. The sumptuous interior lends itself to the rich vibrancy of India during the colonial era incorporating a palette of rich colours; ruby, green gold, crimson and purple. The main restaurant seats 82 and is available for private entertaining by appointment whilst the Bedouin style cocktail bar can host private drinks parties for up to 25 guests. Since opening its doors Zaika has received a string of industry accolades including the first Indian restaurant obtaining a Michelin star and the Best Indian Restaurant in the London Restaurant Awards.

Restaurant Review: Cafe Do Brasil

When Brazilian native Ana Paixao Davis immigrated to Oklahoma in 1983, she couldn't speak English and had only $100. Today, she owns and operates Cafe do Brasil, 440 NW 11, a popular eatery that serves Brazilian cuisine against gay walls of green, yellow and blue, the colors of the Brazilian flag. Originally called More Than Muffins when it opened in 1994, the restaurant changed names in 1998. Then in 2005, the restaurant got a new home. Café Do Brasil celebrates its third anniversary in its midtown location on Nov. 22, with specials beginning on Nov. 16. Don’t forget about Club Bossa Nova at the Top, which is just upstairs from the dining room and boasts rooftop seating.

Q: Why did you come to America?A: In Brazil, women move from their parents' homes to their husband's homes, become housewives and reproduce. In southeast Brazil, my father owns and operates chicken farms, and my mother is a homemaker who raised children. I am one of 12; I have six older siblings and five younger. I love my parents and family; they're awesome. But I didn't want my traditional culture. I wanted to grow as a person, as a woman, and learn something different. My father refused to help me financially; he didn't want me to leave. But I did at age 25. I came to Oklahoma because a younger brother was going to college here. He was homesick and moved back after graduation. But I stayed and went to school, first to learn English and then earn a business/hotel and restaurant management degree at Oklahoma City University and the University of Central Oklahoma. Q: How'd you make it?A: I started out busing tables at Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler, because tables don't talk. Later, I worked as a manager at Cocina de Mino Mexican restaurant for former owner Leticia Hernandez. From that little lady I learned everything, from cooking and food presentation to greeting customers at the door and making them feel special. She now has the Adobe Grill, a Mexican restaurant at NW 50 and Shartel. Q: When did you start your business?A: In 1994, I and my older brother Mario, who moved here later, opened More Than Muffins. We served breakfast and lunch from a small storefront we rented at 1903 Classen Blvd. The first day, we made $65; the second day, $120 and I thought yes, yes! But we worked really hard cooking and cleaning, and had little money to pay ourselves after we paid our staff, which eventually grew to seven. In 1998, I bought out my brother, changed the name of the restaurant and introduced native Brazilian cuisine. Q: Tell us about your relocation here.A: After I became Cafe do Brasil, I quickly outgrew the space on Classen. On Saturdays, customers were lined up outside the door. With the help of my husband (I married Texas native and immigration attorney Larry Davis in 2001), I bought and renovated Garrison Funeral Home at 440 NW 11 and opened Nov. 22, 2005. With 15,000 square feet, we now serve dinner as well as breakfast and lunch, and have grown to 27 employees. Q: Do you plan to move back to Brazil?A: No. Oklahoma is home. I didn't even go back to visit until I'd been here six and a half years. I didn't have the money (my oldest brother paid for my ticket). I also didn't want to be talked into staying. Now, my husband and I visit regularly. We've traveled to many other places, including the French Riviera, Italy, Egypt and the British Virgin Islands. For me, life really did begin after 40.

Restaurant Figueira Rubaiyat Sao Paulo, Brasil
As a connoisseur of great restaurants I must admit that I was more than a little blown away by the facilities at Figueira Rubaiyat in Sao Paulo. The entire restaurant is built around a 100-year-old (maybe older) fig tree that is nothing less than colossal in size.

Brazil has a lot of big trees, but you wouldn’t expect to find one in the middle of a city this size. The restaurant incorporated the great tree into its architecture putting about a quarter of the tree inside the restaurant with the rest outside. The tree appears to be meticulously maintained by experts.

The place specializes in meat mostly raised by the owner of the restaurant and absolutely world-class. While this restaurant is often categorized by guidebooks as a typical “walking around with meat” churrascaria, it’s not. I ordered from a menu. There were no meat-bearing swords being dragged out. There’s an oyster bar with obscurities from southern Brazil and on certain days the restaurant also serves feijoada, the heavy bean and beef stew considered the national dish of Brazil. Everything is high-end and delicious. That said, this is a steak place foremost. The wine list has an excellent selection of obscure and fantastic Brazilian wines as well as a worldwide range of the usual suspects.
View of the modern bar with the glassed in kitchen in the background

View from the bar into the dining room

View of the kitchen from outside the glass

Woodburning domed smokers

Creative use of air-dried tomatoes in the salad

This was the theme wine for this trip. Perhaps the best red wine in Brazil: The outstanding 2002 Salton Talento. This wine is fashioned after a top notch Madiran from the Southwest of France and is truly a world class cabernet blend.

Pau Brasil Manchester

Pau Brasil, a new sensation in Manchester dining, is a traditional Brazilian Churrascaria, a steakhouse loved throughout Brazil for offering succulent cuts of beef, pork, fish and poultry prepared by skilled artisans.
This style of cooking found in the Churrascarias dates back to the Brazilian cowboys, who roasted skewered cuts of meat over fire pits. Together with the Brazilians zest for life, the idea has developed into what you'll find at Pau Brasil on the corner of Lever Street and Great Ancoats Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter.
They don't believe in limits at Pau Brasil, so use the concept of service 'Rodizio' which translates to 'continuous service'. The idea is simple - the meat carvers circle the room offering diners perfectly seasoned meat on skewers straight off the grill, carving you a slice right there at your table. You're able to take as much, or as little, as you want during your visit.

Alongside over 15 different cuts of beef, lamb, pork, fish and chicken, there are various other dishes on offer including salads, vegetables, selected fine cheeses and traditional Brazilian hot dishes all for one fixed price.
Control of the pace of the meal is set by you, with a small two sided disc on your table. Turned to green indicates you wish to have more meat, and turned to red it means you can simply sit back and relax.
Pau Brasil also offers a lunch with plenty of options, from Monday to Friday, until 3pm.

Cafe Exotico Brasil

My friend recommended the Cafe Exotico Brasil as one of the few places in Vancouver where you can order an authentic version of Feijoada, which is the national dish of Brazil. Pictured below, the Feijoada is essentially a meat stew with black beans, served with rice. Cafe Exotico also serves a vegetarian version of Feijoada for those so inclined.
With a special breakfast menu on weekends, Cafe Exotico offers a great selection of, well, exotic juices such as papaya, mango, passion fruit, and guava. I tried the papaya juice ($2.50), and it was simply bursting with flavor, probably made fresh that morning. I also ordered the heart of palm (palmito) pie with salad (pictured below) which tasted as good as it looked. Heart of palm is a delicacy taken from the growing tip of palm trees, and is traditionally expensive because harvesting the tip actually kills the palm tree. But at Cafe Exotico the pie was one of the most affordable items on the menu, at just around $5.00.
This cafe is one of the most welcoming places I have been to lately, with staff who took the time to explain about the different ingredients in the dishes, and who were obviously happy about our table's interest in Brazilian food. They also have a piano in the restaurant and live music occasionally (call for details). I'm definitely going back here for dinner sometime, hopefully to try the shrimp casserole.

Brasil Steak House Restaurant

All You Can EatBrasil Steak House Restaurant serves a replica of Brazilian style food, with 11 different kinds of top quality meats barbecued on the grill, located in downtown Cabo San Lucas.Cabo San Lucas - Puerto Vallarta - Nuevo Vallarta

Vegetarians need not apply. The Brasil Steakhouse is for serious meat eaters. No menus in this traditional restaurant—you eat what they bring you, and they bring you a ton. Your meal starts off with an array of crispy little appetizers including fried banana slices and rice balls. Theses little critters are delicious and even better when washed down with an ice-cold beer, be careful though, you’ve only just begun. Next up, an assortment of salads ranging from tomatoes and cucumbers to coleslaw and pasta. You’ll know your Brazilian feast has officially started when you see your waiter approaching your table wielding a three-foot long sword.
Although your immediate reaction may be to run for you life, stay put and prepare yourself for a carnivorous celebration. Look again and you will see one of twelve different types of meat stuck to the sword waiting to be sliced right onto your plate. Your feast has now begun! Whether you prefer perfectly seasoned ribs, bacon-wrapped turkey breast, fillet mignon, barbeque chicken wings, New York steak, traditional Mexican-style carne asada, rack of lamb or any other of the twelve meats available from the kitchen, you are encouraged to eat as much as possible. The meal described is all you can eat, and they mean all you can eat.

The cost is about $25 per person, drinks not included. The restaurant is located on Emiliano Zapata right in the center of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Open from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm everyday. Seating capacity for groups of up to 150 people.

Bar&Wine
Via Brasil's bar is stocked with a complete array of beverages including many expressive wines from Brasil, as well as, exotic and intoxicating brands of the Brasilian liqour Cachaca, which is the key ingredient in our famous "Caipirinha".
Our Caipirinha's, which have been called some of the best anywhere outside of Brasil, are made of fresh limes, sugar, and your choice of Cachaca, poured over cracked ice and gently shaken and served for your delight.
In addition to our "classic" Caipirinha's with lime, we offer a variety of other fruits which may be substituted to give you that absolutely sublime experience you are looking for with our finest Caipirinha's. Aside from our famous signature drink we have many other exotic Cachaca-based cocktails to choose from, such as our very popular Caipisake and Caipiwine. Whichever you desire, all are sure to satisfy and perfectly compliment both your meal and your evening.
Over the past few years we at Via Brasil have worked continuously in developing a wine list to match our unique and mouthwatering cuisine, a wine selection of depth, breath and diversity. Matching food and wine is an art, but it is an art that should always be fun. This is the concept that we pursue with all of our employees. We're constantly updating vintages, monitoring new releases and coaching the staff. However, this is an over simplification of the process we've incorporated at Via Brasil, since we believe that wines are food for the soul, they are definitely the expression of our passionate pursuit of commitment at Via Brasil.

Cambridge England Restaurant Menus
When I was a student at Harvard University I amassed quite a collection of take-out menus from restaurants in the area of Cambridge Massachusetts. At first, I kept them in a bundle in my desk drawer. They proved quite useful, but one time I was away from my room, and found myself out of luck. Fortunately, technology can come to the rescue, although it was no easy task to digitize all of those menus! But it was great fun, and there was a lot of response. You can view that site at http://menus.lipoff.org/
Now I'm a student at the other Cambridge, in England, I've decided to repeat the process of gathering menus, scanning them in, and posting them on my website. I've learned a thing or two about doing this over the past several years, so now almost all of the images will be optimized GIFs in six shades of grey, and also in multi-page PDF files, which can be easily printed (set by default to A4 paper size). I also copy menus that can be found on the web as well.
The collection is at more than one-hundred and forty-five restaurants right now, and while I will be adding to the collection as much as I can, I would very much appreciate your help! If your favorite restaurant is not represented please send me the physical menu and I'll scan it, post it, and return it to you. Please try not to fold them more than necessary if you send them to me. I can be reached by post at this address:
